2.1 Speaker Systems For Computers

George asks…

I want a powerful 2.1 speaker system for my computer. Must be loud and have strong bass. Any suggestions?

I have been looking at the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra MX6021 but according to Altec Lansing’s site it is no longer available to view; therefore I think they aren’t being made anymore.

Mark asks…

Audiophiles, how do I tune a basic 2.1 speaker system?

Alright Audiophiles, simple situation, you only have three nobs to turn (or adjust):

- 2.1 speakers overall sound
- the bass for the 2.1 speakers
- computer volume

Let’s say your listening to music or watching a movie… how much do you turn up the overall sound of the 2.1 speakers, the bass and the windows computer volume?

100% means all the way.

They all can’t be 100%, which ones provide better sound.

21speakersystem answers:

Well… There is no easy straight forward answer for this.
- Number one is which 2.1 system do you have?
Your answer is heavily dependent on your system specs… Such as satellite freq response and subwoofer crossover setting/ low pass setting : and whether there is a setting for that.

After we know your specs…
I’d recommend setting your knobs at where you like it, as this is dependent on the type of music you listen to and/or how the movie soundtrack was recorded.
… You may find yourself constantly adjusting the bass volume – this is normal amongst most systems.

Hope this helps!
Email me if you have any other questions… Let me know which model you have.

Mary asks…

How do I get my 2.1, one jack computer speaker system to work with my sound card?

I actually ended up getting a much higher end onboard sound card with my new system than I expected and now my subwoofer will not wotk with the system. I have two front speakers and a subwoofer that all go through one jack but my new sound card has 6 plugs for things specifically such as front speakers, rear speakers, center/subwoofers etc.. The only way I currently get sound is to plug jack into the “front speaker slot BUT I really do not get any sound out of the subwoofer now. is it possible to get a splitter and plug something into the “rear/subwoofer spot or is my sound card too advaced for a 2.1 system?

21speakersystem answers:

Lol! I would check the connections of your speaker system, it should just work fine. I suspect incorrect connections. You did plug your subwoofer to your speakers right?

Or try hooking your speakers and sub up to a stereo system to make sure your speakers aren’t defective. If they work then you know it’s just a matter of how you have them hooked up.

I want a good 2.1 Speaker System?

Hi I have Logitech Z55000 5.1 System for my computers but I need a good 2.1 Speaker System for my computer to listen Musics must have 12″ Sub-woofer and deep punching bass. More RMS would be better.
Sub Woofer should have Amplifier so I do not need a external Amplifier.

I want a budget 2.1 speaker system for my bedroom (w/ ipod or pc) How do I set it up?

Hey I bought a cheap computer speaker set, not the best ever. I saw these on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-8-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1238271427&sr=1-1

And similar ones. But I heard this is not powered and it needs a receiver/amp?

I am willing to get a small one for it but I don’t want to buy one of those 300 dollar behemoth. Also I would need a subwoofer for the system too.

So what do you recommend me to do? I just want something that can power my computer sound system or ipod in my bedroom.

I want something below 100 total (the Sony speakers are 50, maybe a cheap subwoofer and a working receiver for 50 both?)

21speakersystem answers:

I think you’re better off just getting a mini-system with the iPod dock. Here’s one that you might like with good sound (see the source web address below). Or, you can look for something similar…

The stereo’s owner’s manual will help you get all set up.

Happy listening!

What is a good stereo (not surround) speaker system for a television?

I’m actually using computer speakers right now, but they don’t have a remote so I have to get up whenever I want to change the volume. Call me lazy, but it gets annoying!

Anyone have a recommendation of a good 2.1 system or soundbar in the sub-$100 range that has a remote?

21speakersystem answers:

Nothing comes in the sub 100 dollar range unless it’s used. Don’t skimp on the audio, it’s half the info, video is the other half, spend as much as you did on the TV. You said call you lazy, I’m calling you cheap. A stereo receiver is a min of 100, two decent speakers is another 100, and add signal cable and speaker wire plus tax and you’re around 300. But you’ll have that sound equipment longer than your next two cars, … It just lasts a long time. You mentioned 2.1 and the .1 usually means a subwoofer, once you add one of those you’re getting into much more expensive things, a cheap sub costs 100 dollars and the receiver I mentioned for 100 doesn’t support a separate subwoofer…

Logitech Speaker System Z313

Donna asks…

What are the two screws on the bottom of the subwoofer of the Logitech Z313 Speaker system used for?

I own a speaker system thats the Logitech Z313 with 2 satellite speakers and a compact subwoofer. There are 2 screws with 2 washer looking things below them that are on the subwoofer box. I want to know what those do because they will not come out no matter which way I turn the screw driver.

How can I plug a Logitech z313 speaker system to my LCD TV?

I recently bought this speaker system to use it with my laptop but I want to also plug it on my LCD TV. I have a LG scarlet ( 32Lg60)
Thanks for the answer; however I do not see any “out” on my TV, the only one for out is a Digital Audio Out Jack, the rest are In

21speakersystem answers:

Simple,
Get a cable from Electronics store made with 1/8″ mini stereo headphone jack on one end and standard RCA type red and white stereo jacks on the other. These are common cables used to hook an iPod up to a home stereo. You will use them reversed with the stereo jacks hooked to the “audio out” on the back of the TV and the mini jack going to the “input” of the computer speakers. This is actually the most economical way to get great sound from a TV without purchasing an actual home theater system.

Helen asks…

Can I use the Logitech Speaker System Z313 with my laptop?

I’m looking for some new speakers for my room, and I’m trying to decide between the Logitech Z313 and the Z323 models. I like the Z313 model because of the hand control, but I’m not sure if I will be able to plug in either of them to my laptop. If it helps, I have 3 USB ports, an ethernet port, a port (not sure what its called) that is used to plug in projecters to, a red mic port, a green “audio?” port, and a headphone jack. Please help me if you can; also a review on one or both of those systems would be great,
Sorry guys- just checked and the headphone jack is actually the green audio jack. My mistake.

21speakersystem answers:

Either speaker system will work with your laptop. They would connect to the black/uncolored audio jack (looks similar to the headphone jack), which should be labeled “Line Out”. Unless the green is the only Audio Out that your laptop has, in which case the speakers would connect to that.

Feature-wise, the Z323 is better in that it has slightly better output power and range (30 Watts RMS & 40Hz-20kHz vs 25 Watts & 48Hz-20kHz), and it has multiple inputs, so you can connect more than just your laptop to it. If you do not need the extra inputs, however, then the Z313 will work fine; 5 Watts and 8Hz difference are not worth the extra $20 by themselves.

You should go with Logitech Z313 Speaker System

The control pod makes it easy to control volume and headphone controls.
You can fill your room with big, balanced sound (25 watts).
The compact subwoofer fits into tight spaces and delivers deeper bass when you want to feel the beat.
With its easy setup, just connect the speakers to the subwoofer, and plug the subwoofer into your computer. That?s it.

Robert asks…

Can I change the bass on my Logitech – Z313 2.1-Channel Speaker System (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer)?

I bought it from BestBuy and the quality is amazing.. bass is amazing, feels like surround sound in my computer space, couldnt argue with the sound. The bass does sometimes feel a little too much sometimes, some songs have a lot of bass but I just want to even it out even though I put it on the floor. Anyone know how to go into the computer settings or chance it on the speakers?

Can you connect Logitech speakers to a compaq labtop via a USB port?

Hi I’m considering buying Logitech Z-2300 THX Certified 2.1 200-watt Speaker System or a LogitechZ313 2.1-Channel Speaker System and can I plug these speakers into my labtop’s USB port? My labtop’s headphone jack is shot and doesn’t produce sound. thanks for your help.

21speakersystem answers:

It is possible to do this, but most likley you will need a usb audio adapter. This is because most pc 2.1 speakers (and most others) need ther headset jack on the front, side, or back of the chassis. If your headset jack is destroyed, you need this adapter, the plus is their cheap and available. I here is a link to one, i am not saying buy this one, but this is what you will need:

logitech speakers to digital audio tv?

i have the Logitech Speaker System Z313 but it doesnt fit into my new tv. the tv has a digital audio out.
is there an adapter or another wire i can get to be able to plug in the speakers to the tv?
is it an analog to digital wire that i need?

21speakersystem answers:

Well first off, your Speaker system is for a computer. Second off, I’m not positive what you mean by digtital audio, but usually that means optical, which gives you the best quality. To find iout if you have digital audio optical or digital audio coaxial, click on the source I provided. On hte right side ,there is a list of connection types. # 7 is coaxial, and number 8 is optical.

You need something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Optical-Female-Digital-Toslink-Adapter/dp/B000I97H68

If you need to find a bigger wire (it might not reach your TV, I don’t know about your set-up), just search “3.5mm female to optical male”. Plug the wire that you usually plug into the computer, this time into the insertion point on the adapter, Then plug the opposite side of the adapter into your tv’s audio out.

If it’s digital coaxial, then I can’t help you. I spent close to half an horu searching for 3.5mm to digital coaxial and couldn’t find it sorry.

Not just for computers – improves cheap TVs, July 7, 2008
By Arthur Kimes (Los Angeles, CA USA) – See all my reviews

I recenty got a inexpensive 19″ HDTV which has decent enough video quality but it burdened with the WORST sound I’ve heard on a TV. Tinny sounding speakers with little volume. But there was a headphone jack on the TV. With headphones, the TV sounded excellent. My computer speakers were connected with a headphone jack… They worked just fine on the TV. I looked for powered 2.1 computer speaker systems on Amazon and was delighted to find many choices under $40. The best value for the money seemed to be this Logitech and the cheap TV now has excellent sound.

I give this a 5 star rating (instead of a 3 or a 4) because of the low price. There are better 2.1 systems but nowhere near this price.

Awesome, January 25, 2008
By Lisa Trent – See all my reviews

Great sound with a nice touch of base. All the quality in a small package. The speaker wires are really not long enough for distant placement of speakers the wire doesn’t spread that far apart. The sub woofer does well it packs a punch when cranked up. The piano black color adds nice touch to the speakers and woofer which is kind of heavy but slim enough to fit just about anywhere. The volume control and mic/phone jack controls are easy to use and a big plus for me. Easy gliding volume control the whole system feels solid with no visible weaknesses. Over all a good speaker system for the money. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Which one of these speaker systems should i get?

Cyber Acoustics Subwoofer Satellite System (CA-3602)
OR
Creative A220 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System

Google them theyre both on amazon, thats where I’m buying them
The first one has more reviews but people who have used it say the Creative is much better. I was hoping someone on here knew a lot about speaker systems was on here could lead me in the right direction. If you don’t know what your talking about please don’t try to answer. Thank you !
I think I’m going to go with the Cyber Acoustics Subwoofer Satellite System (CA-3602) unless you have something to say that will change my mind

I would have to actually hear them side by side (see if you can find any stores locally that have them set up for demo), but Creative has been at it for a long time – so I would probably lean that way.

What 1 or 2 Speaker Surround Systems need to be checked out?

OK…. I have a very highly rated 6.1 Home audio system but it takes up a lot of room in my new condo. I want to get a solid 2 speaker system such as the Bose 3-2-1 system. The Bose system isn’t bad but I know there are multiple other systems that I should look into. Polk just came out with a sound bar but it doesn’t have a sub and I can’t seem to find and real solid reviews on it. If you have some ideas please let me know.

21speakersystem answers:

None of them “need” to be checked out. Your highly rated 6.1 system will outshine the best of them. I’d suggest you think twice before this significant downgrade.

Any recommendations please for a new 2.0 (preferably) or 2.1 speaker system for my Laptop?

I’m looking to spend a maximum of £60, and want something brilliant for that money, after all they are replacing a pair of Creative Gigaworks T20 Series I’s so they have a lot to live up to. I listen to lots of music, primarily drum & bass, dance music and rock also, and I want to use the system with my PS3 also as it is currently running through a monitor with no in-built speakers. Recommendations, reviews and links would be very much appreciated guys, thanks in advance!

Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speaker system- sub woofer question?

I was wondering how the sub woofer on the Logitech Z-2300 is. I am looking for a thunderous sub woofer that will shake the walls from explosions and gun shots. The Description of the system says that the sub woofer is very thunderous and the reviews of the system say that the sub woofer will shake the walls. I will Mainly use this sub woofer for playing my game system or for movies, will this sub woofer meet my expectations?

P.S. Its THX certified and has a Response Bandwidth – 35Hz – 20kHz and has a 8 inch sub. Its sold on amazon for $115. Here is a direct link on amazon to it:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-2300-THX-Certified-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002SQ2P2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1289699722&sr=8-1

21speakersystem answers:

I think it will probably suit your needs. However you should know that as sub-woofers go this is a typical, off the shelf, consumer grade distortion box. It goes boom and that’s about it. THX has become meaningless. It just means that they paid to get it certified and it met some very loose criteria. Personally I wouldn’t even call it a subwoofer. The “Response Bandwidth – 35Hz – 20kHz” means that it will produce measurable sound at those frequencies. A true measurement standard is “Frequency response + – 3 dB.” My guess is that this thing is up 10 dB at 60 Hz and down 10 dB at 35 Hz. There’s your boom. Forget about the wattage rating. It’s exaggerated as well. You might do well to refer to a question I answered perviously:

Which is the best computer speaker and why?

what i want to know is which speaker system is better and why? (Harmon and Kardon HKTS7 or Logitech Z-5500)
i want to use it for gaming and also music and films. i like a mixture of music, and i have to admit, i do love my bass, i would like to turn it up to the max and not needing to worry that it might for distorted.
i have read many reviews about the Logitechs and they said that you may need to buy a new fuse?
i want to connect it up to my computer
currently i am using a Dell 2.1 sound system which is plugged into my Samsung 24″ monitor (Syncmaster 2494 HS) and then there is an output lead which i put into my computer. i then have an xbox 360 connected via HDMI to my monitor and the sound is automatically picked up and produced by the speakers instead of the monitor.
i want to be able to hear both the Console and whats playing on my pc without the need of changing cables if possible.
i realize that i may need to purchase a new sound card. and could you recommend any that will be suitable for my requirements.
i would be very grateful is you could list the cables i need and also the names of the stuff i need.
thanks.

21speakersystem answers:

I have the Z-5500. It has amazing bass without distortion, and the satellites sound very good at normal/loud levels, but not quite audiophile quality at low levels.

The Z-5500 has four inputs: 6-channel analog, 2-channel analog, optical digital, and coaxial digital. The two analog inputs are mixed, I use that to listen to the radio and computer simultaneously. I have two other computers connected to the digital inputs, you have to switch to the correct input to hear those.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about the HKTS-7.

Are audio acoustic speakers any good?

I currently have a Creative Inspire T3100 series 2.1 speaker system that I use for music and gaming. I love the set but I recently knocked a speaker down and now it makes noise at high volume (my own fault I know). Anyways, the set is still good, but I was curious if Audio Acoustic speakers are any good. I am looking specifically at a new Acoustic Audio AA3009 2.1 Channel Speaker System I found. My current system has 17 RMS watt sub and 6 RMS watts per speaker for a total of 29 RMS watts. The new one appears to have nicer stats but I can’t find any reviews which makes me nervous about it. I included the link to it. Thanks!

Klipsch 2.1 Promedia

Ken asks…

Help on home audio please?

Ok, I am a total “noob” when it comes to home audio etc. I have a nice Klipsch 2.1 Promedia audio system. But! I want to upgrade! I listen to a lot of different music, but mostly dubstep (low frequency bass lines etc.), some electronic, rock and reggae. I want a 3 piece audio system for my room. Id like a subwoofer and two speakers, all for around 200 dollars. I would like to buy a used subwoofer from ebay or craigslist, and buy new or used tower speakers or maybe bookshelf / studio monitors. How would i go about hooking these all up? and how canm i do it so that i can plug it into a 3.5mm jack for convenience? Thanks a lot!

21speakersystem answers:

You can’t just connect speakers directly to an i-pod or similar compact player, you need amplification… Http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-772

This 2.1 amplifier has 25 watts/ch @ 8 ohm plus 50 watts @ 4 ohm for your subwoofer. It uses RCA inputs but you can buy a cable with the 3.5 mm jack at one end and RCA at the other. Make sure your speakers are not rated less than 8 ohm and your sub not less than 4 ohm. The same web site has lots of speakers. If you don’t have a problem building the speaker cabinet they have lots of woofers, mid, and tweeters etc many for very low prices.

John asks…

What are the best quality computer speakers?

I have a macbook pro 17″ and am looking for the best speakers in terms of sound quality. Price and size are less important than preformance. I do quite a bit of editing in Logic 8 and the related programs, thus I need to hear every detail I can. As I already said, price is not much of an issue, but I’d rather not spend money and not get what I paid for.

I am leaning towards the GigaWorks ProGamer G550W by Creative, the XS Satellite speakers by Focal, or the ProMedia 2.1 by Klipsch. Any suggestions?

Here are two self-powered speaker systems I personally own and am very happy with:

If you want 5.1 surround and a big subwoofer, the Logitech Z-5500 is excellent:

If you want audiophile quality, and two channels is enough, the Audioengine A5 is the very best pair of powered speakers I’ve heard. They’re incredibly heavy, with surprisingly deep bass. Few speakers under $1000 sound this good:

You can get the A5 from B&H for $325 shipped. The Z-5500 is $255 + shipping from Amazon.

Sandra asks…

Is it safe to operate my home stereo by plugging it into my car?

I have a nice stereo system (Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1) that includes two speakers and a subwoofer. I decided that it wasn’t getting enough use in my house, so I have put it in my car. My car is a 2002 Acura RSX type S. Basically I put the sub in the trunk, and found a good place in the car that secures the speakers on either side to be sure that no parts move around while driving. It has worked out great, but my only concern is whether or not it is safe. When I plug the stereo in and turn it on, there is a faint electrical buzzing noise that I can hear, which leads me to believe that perhaps a car battery and electrical system simply cannot support the large amount of power that the stereo requires. I would appreciate it if anyone with knowledge on the subject would help me out.

21speakersystem answers:

Whatever power supply you’re using for the speakers isn’t giving a pure enough DC voltage, that’s the cause of the buzzing noise. Even if you do start using a higher-quality power supply that puts out the correct voltage, the climate outdoors will get hotter, colder, damper, and dryer than what those speakers were designed to withstand – inside of a house. Those speakers probably aren’t going to last very long in those kinds of extremes.

Sandy asks…

Which of these two 2.1 audio systems should I get?

http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-specifications/

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/7321

It’s too hard to choose because they are similar in so many ways…THX Certified, 200 Watts, etc. It was confirmed that the Logitech does not have tweeters and it looks like the Klipsch does.

21speakersystem answers:

Klipsch system is better.

Steven asks…

What speaker cable do i need?

I have these speakers:

http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-overview/

and the left speaker sounds louder and clearer than the right one, so i switched the wires on the back of the 2 speakers around and then the RIGHT speakers now sounded better so i know its the cable and not the speakers. there is an exact replacement for this wire on klipsch‘s website found here:

http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-speaker-wire-set-overview/

but supposedly i would get better sound quality from these monster gold plated thx certified cables:

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Standard-THX-Certified-Speaker-Cable/dp/B00008VF91/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257459550&sr=8-1

but those monster cables don’t seem to have an actual male jacks on the end like i need and i don’t want to have to do it myself. and why would i need a 100 ft cord. i want to know where there is a gold plated high quality PRE MADE cable somewhere for under $25.

thanks

21speakersystem answers:

Go with the Klipsch product.
Monster is well made, but they are over-hyped and not worth the price they charge.

Budget 2.1 audio system?

Hi, I need a few suggestions

Currently have my Insignia NS-B2111 Bookshelf Speakers hooked up through my Klipsch sub that came with my old promedia 2.1, and I’m controlling them through the control pod. Now, would I notice a difference in sound quality if I was to switch to an actual receiver/sub? These are the ones I’m hoping to purchase soon.

-Receiver
Onkyo TXSR304 $99

http://www.ecost.com/Detail/Receiver…/40236464.aspx

-Sub
Dayton SUB-100 10″ – $131.80

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd…number=300-633

This system will be used mostly for music, and some gaming. I’m looking for the best receiver I can get for under $150. I figured since I won’t need HDMI? that I dont need an expensive receiver. Unless their is a way to get HDMI sound through my sound card (Xtrememusic). Thanks

21speakersystem answers:

Buy the receiver from shoponkyo.com. They sell warrantied factory refurbs. Right now they have 10% off and when you sign into the site you get a $10 credit on your first purchase.

The best sub for around $150-160 shipped is the Velodyne VX-10.
The best MUSIC sub on a budget is the av123.com “X” sub, it’s $199+ shipping but is the BEST cheap sub for music.

The Dayton sub is kind of boomy and fine for home theater but lacks definition and finesse for music

Helen asks…

How can I do a self diagnostic on my new audio system?

The box looked old and might have been handled rough so I’m suspecting what was inside might be damaged. I bought this a few days ago from BestBuy

http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-overview/

I just want to make sure everything works properly. How can I test it?

21speakersystem answers:

I would just look at it for damage look at the drivers and surrounds then play some of your favorite music fairly loud but not so loud that it will damage the unit or cause distortion… Listen carefully to see if the bass is right if the highs the mids are there without distortion…now no small speaker like that is going to be perfect perfect but if the sound is to your liking and it sound alright with various types of music you are familiar with then it should be good.

Mandy asks…

Connect LED or Strobe to Subwoofer Amp or Subwoofer?

Okay, I have dual Klipsch promedia 2.1 subs, and another one with a broken driver cone, but a good amp. I was wondering how to determine what kind of LED to purchase to connect to the amp terminals so that he light pulses insync with the bass. I know I will need a resistor to prevent the LED from burning out, so I guess I need to know what he tolerances will need to be on the resistor and the LED. Does the amp output at 110V AC (probably converted to DC though i guess) Anyways some help would be great, it seems like a very easy project to do for anyone, but I just need a little bit of information. Thanks

21speakersystem answers:

You need to know what voltage appears at the speaker leads. If the speaker is 50 watts and 4 ohms the voltage must peak at about 14 volts. Most LED’s run fine on 20 mA so put a 720 ohm resistor in series with it. If you have a different wattage or speaker impedance you will need to adjust the resistor a bit. This will make the LED flash in time to the music as it changes in volume but it won’t brighten or dim much. That requires an added circuit. BTW, audio is AC so your speaker will have AC on it not DC.

Logitech Speaker System Z906

Thomas asks…

Digital Coaxial vs. Digital Optical – Speaker System?

I plan on buying the THX Certified Logitech Z906 speaker system for my studio set-up, and I just had a quick question.

Both my computer, and the product have Digital Coaxial and Optical compatibility, and I was wondering which is best for video/audio production (provides highest quality). Both also have the traditional Analog system, but I suspect this is a less effective alternative.

21speakersystem answers:

On paper there shouldn’t be too much between the sound, especially at the rate you’re most likely using, it’s a digital signal i.e. Just 1′s and 0′s. Coaxial are more susceptible to ground loop (hum or buzz) but this is unlikely, Optical are more susceptible optical to jitter but again this is unlikely. Optical are more delicate and more likely to damage.

Personally I go for Coaxial every time and in the context of my system think it does sound better when I’ve used it. (AV amp and Squeezebox to DAC)

Computer for video editing?

I need to build a low and high end computer for video editing for an assignment. One of the marking categories is compatibility, which I’m unsure of in this build.

High End Build is:

Motherboard: Gigabyte G1-Sniper ATX Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i7 990X

Memory: Corsair CMX12GX3M3A2000C9 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 3GB

Primary Hard Drive: OCZ Vertex 2 3.5in 120GB SSD

Secondary Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB WD2002FAEX

Optical Drive: ASUS DRW-24B3LT 24X DVDRW LightScribe

Sound Card: ASUS Xonar HDAV1.3 – Unsure if a sound card is needed, will the motherboards integrated sound be enough?

Case: Antec Dark Fleet DF-10 Case

Power supply: Corsair AX750 Gold Power Supply

Mouse: Gigabyte GHOST M8000X Gaming Mouse

Keyboard: Razer Dragon Age 2 Black Widow Ultimate Mechanical Keyboard

Monitor: Samsung MD230X3 Multi-Display 3x23inch cPVA Panels

Speakers: Logitech Z906 THX 5.1 Speaker System

Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64bit with SP1 OEM

So that’s it. Will all that work with each other? Do you have a suggestion?

Thanks. :)

21speakersystem answers:

Yes, it’s all completely compatible. Socket LGA 1366 motherboard and processor (6-core), triple channel DDR3 memory. 64-bit OS to run the 12 GB RAM effectively.

The 750W power supply is good for a single GTX 580, though it wouldn’t handle a second one in SLI mode. That’s fine, because unless your video software takes major advantage of CUDA or OpenGL co-processing, the 580 is way overkill for a video editing system (great for gaming, though).

For video editing, the onboard audio is more than sufficient, as very few camcorders record in anything better than stereo.

The 990X beats out the newer i7-2600K Sandy Bridge processor by 16% or so in video processing. Of course it costs 3x as much, so I only recommend the 990X if price is not a concern.

Richard asks…

need suggestions for audio setup in dorm?

I have about a 300 dollar budget right now for an audio setup and would like it to be compatible with usb (computer/ipod).
I’m stuck between a logitech z906 and creating my own setup with a sub, receiver bookshelf speakers

the logitech is obviously the easiest option because everything is there and i’ve heard good things about the power of the system.

however, i’ve also heard that as far as music is concerned, the logitechs aren’t that great compared to other speakers. So i was thinking to getting a set of bookshelf speakers used from craigslist such as a pair of bose 201 series II (60w) for $30 and a JBL PSW-115 (350w) subwoofer for $70

I’m completely ignorant on this subject so I don’t know what kind of receiver/speaker/subwoofer i should get or which ones are compatible with one another. Any help or any direction to somewhere that can educate me would be greatly appreciated. I’m open to any and all suggestions, but yes I do want that much power, please don’t debate about whether or not i need it.

thanks

21speakersystem answers:

I agree, the new HTIB systems like the logitech are not the best to listen to music. They have an exaggerated bass around 100Hz which sounds OK for watching Movies and Video Gaming but it makes Music sound very unnatural and Boomy.

For Music, you are better off getting a pair of decent tower Speakers and Amplifier/Receiver

Get yourself a basic Ipod/Iphone dock with Audio Out.
Get yourself a 3.5 mm to Stereo RCA cable
Get yourself a Stereo Amplifier/Receiver (Look for more than 100 Watt RMS)
Get a set of a pair of Tower Speakers (look for tower speakers with at least 6 to 8 inch woofers)
If you prefer to go with Bookshelf Speakers get yourself an additional Subwoofer (bookshelf speakers typically cannot produce low frequency Bass as well as Tower Speakers)

If you are planning on buying second hand Amplifier/Speakers, don’t buy anything that is more than 2-3 years old as a Speaker’s Audio quality degrades over time and so will the electronics in an Amplifier unit itself.

You should easily be able to find all of this within the $200-$300 range.

Next, connect the Audio out from the iPod Doc to the Audio input of your amplifier/Receiver using the 3.5 mm to Stereo RCA cable. Hook up your tower speakers to the Amplifiers Speaker Outs.

Pop in your iPod/iPhone into the Dock and fire up the system, it will rock your dorm and blow the pants off those Home theater in a Box systems any day.

Happy hunting :)

What Speakers Should i Buy ?

Im currently looking for speakers for my shed, my shed is an empty room 5m x 6m and i want speakers that can fill the room with a nice crisp sound and heavy bass (that wil shake the floor) Prefarbly, i would like a 5.1 surround sound system, but this is not 100% needed. I have a budget of around £350gbp. I can either buy a pc kit, such as logitech z906/z5500 or a full hi-fi system with subwoofer. What do you reccomend for me to get? Please get back asap

Joseph asks…

What big stereo should I buy?

Ok so the story is that ive been looking to buy a stereo system for my room. so at first i was looking at the logitech z5500′s and the z906‘s because my friend had the 5500′s and they sounded pretty damn good when i listened to them in his room. but then i was looking at reviews and specs and saw that they infact arent even that good speakers as what i was reading. they have no tweeters, and mids are a little distorted and not really there. but what i like about the logitechs is that it comes with the whole system already there so you only need to buy one thing. so i did some more research and found other systems, now in the catagory of “home thearter”. I dont know if that is still what im looking for but anyways some of those looked good. especially on cnet their editors choice energy take classic 5.1 surround sound system looked phenominal. but i dont know if those speakers are still good for music and blasting music really loud and also getting nice crisp bass that i would be able to control (turn up and down like on the logitech). but wouldnt i need an a/v reciever for that? and with that would the a/v recievers even work well with what im trying to do (control my music). MOVING ON, i did some more research and came up with a bunch of different sony speakers that i could put together to make a system, but i dont know how that stuff really works.this is what i would be looking at though. Sony SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers with 8-Inch Woofer (Pair, Black), Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver, Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8″ Woofer (Pair), Sony SS-CN5000 Dual 5.25″ Center Channel Speaker (each, black), Sony SA-W3000 Performance Line 12″ 180-Watt Subwoofer (each, black). Would these be a good combination? as in having a balance between crisp nice controllable super bass, good mids, excellent highs and tweeters. Please help any help would do, even recommendations to other stuff or elaborate on what ive found. Thanks so much!!

21speakersystem answers:

If you truly want crisp clear sound especially crisp clean powerful bass, you really don’t look at any of the stuff you are looking at. No computer speakers deliver this nor do any Sony speakers deliver this.

The problem is cost. Based on what you are looking at I suspect you have a really tight budget but unfortunately it isn’t easy to come up with anything decent sounding without spending real money. Doing it right requires avoiding receivers and going with preamp/processors, digital crossovers, external power amplifiers, high quality speakers, at least two subwoofers etc and this can all add up to costing more than your house. So, you need to look for alternative compromise solutions. Something between what you are looking at and real audio equipment.

Websites such as Dakmart offer refurbished receivers some of which are very old models. This provides you with a source of higher quality equipment for really low prices as long as you don’t need the latest connectivity etc. For $200 ~ $300 you can get an older model receiver that could make the starting point of a decent sounding little system.

Speakers and subwoofers are the hard part. If you had the tools and know how you could build them but lacking this you need to look at used or you could possibly consider a kit that is easy to assemble. Forget about the Sony, those aren’t going to sound good at all. The hardware is too cheap and the cabinets are too cheaply constructed. Thin wall speaker cabinets radiate just about as much or more sound into the room as the speaker cones but it’s very garbled distorted sound contaminating the sound from the speaker cones. If you rap on the side of a speaker cabinet with your knuckles and it sounds like a hollow door, it’s a piece of crap speaker.

Instead of the Sony subwoofer you are looking at consider something like Emotiva… Http://emotiva.com/ultra_sub12.shtm Yes, it’s more expensive than the Sony but it’s a lot better. This isn’t a high end sub, it’s very much an entry level sub but Sony is well beneath entry level. You could also consider a kit from PE… Http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-760

As for bookshelf speakers a used set of Radio Shack Minimus 7′s would sound better than the Sony’s you are looking at. Something like this… Http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBX1 would be a lot better than the Sony. Better still, something like this kit… Http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=302-962

Good audio cost money unfortunately. Talking about “crisp bass” etc in the same paragraph with things like Sony and Logitech is a bit like talking about luxury car performance looking at pedal powered cars in a Toy’s-R-Us. Good sound just doesn’t exist in those markets. Try Googling “High-End Audio” in your city and find a high end store. A Magnolia in a Best Buy doesn’t qualify. Go to the high end store and listen to systems far outside your price range… System costing $10,000 or more. This will give you an idea what better sound is like… Actually it’s pretty much crap compared to what’s possible but at least it’s far above anything you’ve ever heard out of computer speakers. At least it will give you a higher bar to strive for, then you start looking for budget ways to get at least something a lot better than computer speakers or Sony speakers.
